Something went wrong. Packaging should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag.Lost my original and I found this website. Such a bargain and the printing is clear and crisp. Spiral bound so that you can lay it flat or completely turn the book inside out. The best bargain on the internet I have come across in a long time. Should have came here first as quaility was great. Decided to buy slighty cheaper version elsewhere. A mistake as quilty was poor with greyish lines on all pages. Decided come back here and was not disappointed, quality spot on. Print is clear and pages clean. It has been so much easier for me personally to access the information it contains in the format it is presented in than the PDF (free online). In short I am more than happy with the product and would have no qualms in recommending it to any interested party. A must for the beginner. Cancel Thanks, we'll look into this. All Rights Reserved. Watch whichever screen you prefer. Keep spinning the dial, and you can record raw at the same time as JPG.

See also Raw vs. JPG. Images look great. I always shoot in BASIC. As resolution increases, the size of any artifacts become smaller, and therefore invisible in any size print made from any size image from the D800 or D800E today. I leave mine at their default SIZE Priority. I won't run Nikon's buggy software on my computer, and no other software lets me get these great colors out of my D800 or D800E's NEF files: the colors don't happen until after they pass through the trade-secret color matrices and dynamic processing used by Nikon in-camera Open a JPG, and it's the same as the TIF, but at a fraction of the file size. The only time anyone complains about their camera being very slow, it's always because they've accidentally selected TIF as their format. This is why most people paid good money for their D800s, but it's an image so huge that it's only needed if you're printing 10 feet (3 meters) wide, are going to look at the prints very closely, and then use only the finest lenses and technique. Simple: I shoot a lot, and bloated files waste time and money in transfer, backup and storage. Try it: shoot the same thing at several settings, and you won't be able to see the difference. See this on my D200, whose resolution at its largest setting is about the same as the D800 at its smallest! Spin the front knob to fine tune. See my White Balance Examples page and my White Balance page for the specifics of each setting. It makes its best guess for WB. It's usually very good. I'll get to trims in a bit. I use the PRESET setting for my studio strobes. This Kelvin setting lets me set between all the other settings continuously, instead of in fixed steps as the above selections. The calibrations are abstract in what we scientists call (degrees) Kelvin. More degrees look warmer. There are no rules in real-world photography: use whatever setting looks best to you. It adjusts in random small steps you can't hit every single degree.

I'll use something around 2,650 K in dim home lighting to get neutral results. I always grab a napkin, t-shirt, back of a menu or other piece of white. Black text on the paper makes no difference, so long as the background is white. If you choose a bluish piece of paper (like a glossy printed piece), your results will be warmer (more orange), and if you use a more orange piece of paper (like a cheap paper napkin), your results will be more blue. Random gray items very rarely neutral, even if they look gray. Changing the angle of the object often will favor one kind of a light or another in mixed light, which will greatly affect your result. Therefore I set them a little more magenta (M1) in this same menu, and all is well. All you need to do is look at the image you just made on the LCD. Like it? You're done. Too cool (blue)? Then hold WB and move the front dial a couple of clicks to about A3 and try again. The more A you add, like A5 or A6, makes the image more orange, and the more blue you add, like B4 or B6, makes it bluer. This is how we set the camera's sensitivity to light. I prefer to change ISO in more meaningful full stops as you can set in a menu here. Above ISO 6,400 or below ISO 100 Nikon uses bizarre terminology to scare amateurs away from setting these ISOs because these same amateurs would clog up Nikon's (800) NIKON-UX support lines complaining about grain or squashed highlights. The D800 and D800E turn themselves off after a few seconds of ignoring them. The only thing the OFF position does is act asIn Pro mode, the camera picks the best combination of aperture and shutter speed all by itself. If I want a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture, I just flick the rear dial, and in that one flick I've set whatever new combination of aperture and shutter speed I need.

Too many of us who lead workshops have to spend half our time teaching photo learners to use this mode and just flick the rear dial as we do ourselves instead of them trying to use the older A, S and M modes some high-school photo teacher mistaught them 20 years ago to do the same thing with far more difficulty. Nikon callsThe asterisk doesn't appear in the finder, but you can see the apertures and shutter speeds. The asterisk goes away when you return to the standard combinations. You can reverse which dial does what in the Custom Setting: Controls Menu. Of course in A or S mode you can't set one of the two values because the camera is setting one for you. Look at the LCD to check exposure. If you wanted to do that, use another mode and let the D800 and D800E do the setting for you. I always turn off AUTO ISO when I enter Manual Mode, which is now as easy as holding the ISO button and flicking the rear dial. It will format the same card next time without having to fiddle with it again. This is because files andProfessionals prefer toReformatting completelyIf your photo is too dark or light, just change the setting and try again. Easy! Ignore Nikon when they suggest you don'tThe two displays only read the value when the button is held, otherwise those digits read exposures remaining. It doesn't change any photos you've already made. The firmware is defective in setting the compensation bar graph to the increments selected for exposure, not to the increments we've selected for exposure compensation. The top LCD and rear INFO screen work fine. See my Guide to Nikon AF Settings for guides to other cameras. For still subjects, simply using the center sensor is often still the best way to focus. Cameras have added all this AF system complexity to sell more cameras; you don't really need all this. The first dimension obviously is distance. The second dimension is time, which we control with the AF-system mode settings.

The two other dimensions are up-down and left-right, which are dealt with by having 51 different AF sensors spread all over the finder. We control how the D800 and D800E uses all its 51 AF sensors with the AF- Area mode controls. I'll skip repeating this. Innovations over the past decades have come from adding more AF sensors. Use this for still subjects. This is used for sports and action. Once selected, how these selected areas are used by the camera are set as AF System Modes above. These modes are: THe D800 and D800E's AF systems are clairvouyant enough to find a subject's closest eye by magic, and are smart enough to identify the subject, even if there are nearer obstacles in the frame, most of the time. THis is one of the key advantages of the D800 and D800E over the Canon 5D MArk III, whose AF system isn't as smart. THe D800 and D800E's AF systems see in color and can recognize subjects, while Canon's can't. If you haven't trusted AUTO before, try it now; it's much more than a simple closest-sensor selector. In this 3D mode, once you assign an AF point to a target, it tracks and moves around the finder automatically as the target moves! Tap the center to go straight to the center sensor. I prefer the AUTO and 3D modes. You may find it easier to use the center point, point the camera so the center point is on the target, and then move the camera and let it move the AF point for you, instead of selecting a different point with the thumb control. Once it gets focused, the D800 and D800E uses distance, motion and even color information to track your subject all over the frame, and keep the correct sensor selected and the focus locked to it like the bite of an angry pit bull. Once you select a sensor and the the D800 and D800E grabs focus, it's not letting go until you've got your shot. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support.

These places have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks! Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. Ok, we need to first get some facts straight: 1. I am a Nikon user. which makes me a Nikon fan.But this aside, I'm not going to lie to you. I give an honest review. 2. I am a member of Nikonians, the non-profit making, Nikon enthusiast organisation who are behind this book together with the publisher Rocky Nook. 3. The Nikon D800 is an AWESOME camera. Yes, the Nikon D800 is an AWESOME camera.

I know the D810 has replaced it now and I know the long awaited replacement to the much loved D700.Having such an awesome camera is though no use if you only know the basics of what it REALLY can do for you. Yes the camera ships with a manual, which is ok, and there are oceans of user sites, set-up guides and feature run-throughs on-line. But none of these replace a single, go-to book. The book is a beefy 560-pages, but dont let that put you off. Darrell Young has an amazing way with words and writes in a very easy going style that is easy to understand. The book is divided up logically with sections on camera set-up and controls, the various menus are described and gone through in depth, the custom settings menus are described and the authors own preferences are explained. The book goes further than the actual camera itself with excellent section explaining White Balance and how Nikons cameras deal with this. The Auto Focus system is explained and metering options are discussed and described and there is another very good chapter on Flash Photography and a look into Nikons Creative Lighting Suite (CLS). I bought the book when I got the camera a few years ago and didn't read it all at once. I have instead read it as and when needed as my photography advances and I try new stuff out. I thoroughly recommend this book.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again One of the best series of guides available - very thorough and clear screen shots. The text is all about the cameras features and their use rather than how to take pictures. What is noticeable is that as time goes by the books get thicker. In ten years time i may well see 1500 pages as manufacturers add new and highly desirable features. I have a properly professional Mamiya RZ system - the manual is only 40 odd pages but the professionals were assumed to know what they were doing!Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Please try again But the second half has more useful information with examples of what you might use the settings for. A far more useful format would have been to go through each menu item along with it's use at the same time, or better still show the functionality of the camera one item at a time and then the various menu options that affect the functionality. Most of the items are without context or with references to items later in the book, so why not put them with the item in the first place. Apart from possible later reference (when you might need to look something up that isn't clear in the camera manual) the first half of the book seems largely useless. The second half of the book provides some very useful info though. All in all I'm teetering on the edge of being happy I bought it and feeling I wasted money. Can't make up my mind. Maybe later if I have need to use it as a reference for the menu system I might appreciate it more.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Kindle version. Yes you do get a comprehensive book that comes with the camera, but it's to full of technical information and boring compared to this book that is on my telephone downloaded from Amazon as a kindle file. It's was cheap to purchase, it was on my phone within seconds of purchasing as are all their books. This book is colourful, easy to follow and teaches you to use the camera from scratch without being boring all full of techy bits and pieces that know one really wants to read. It's full of tips about setting up your camera to suit your needs to match the sort of photography you do and it's worth every penny. I love this book as I did the Nikon D700 book I purchased about a year ago having struggled with that camera and the book that came with it for well over a year. So I personally advise anyone who's got this camera to make the purchase, it will be nothing but of benefit to you. Photographer Mark Eddiford.Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
